Art Synopsis:

The Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish (Astacopsis gouldi), also called Tasmanian giant freshwater lobster, is the largest freshwater invertebrate and the largest freshwater crayfish species in the world. Endemic to northern Tasmania, it is only found in rivers that flow into Bass Strait and the Arthur catchment (except for the Tamar catchment) and is culturally significant to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. Once a common sight in northern Tasmania, the species is now listed as vulnerable under both the Threatened Species Protection Act 1995 and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and as endangered under the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.

I painted this colourful and vibrant painting of the Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish to create awareness of the endangered species. The bright colours are eye-catching against the stark black background.

NRM North are working hard to maintain and improve critical habitat for the species and reduce habitat disturbance. Focusing on mitigating the impact of climate change, such as potential changes to flow and flood events, water temperature extremes, and streamside vegetation health. NRM North is made of volunteers seeking to improve stakeholder and community knowledge of the species, its threats and habitat requirements. If you would like to be a volunteer or donate towards the rehabilitation of the Giant Freshwater Crayfish, contact NRM North (03) 6333 7777, 63-65 Cameron Street, Launceston, Tasmania 7250.
