Artwork Synopsis:
Bicheno is a quaint seaside town located on the east coast of Tasmania, approximately 185 kms from Hobart. It was named in honour of James Ebenezer Bicheno, a notable Colonial Secretary. The local church, established in 1882, served as a shared space for both Presbyterian and Anglican communities. The church’s construction was formally initiated on December 10, 1881, with the opening ceremony taking place exactly one year later December 10, 1882.
On its inaugural day, the Rev. H. T. Hull presided over the morning service, conducting the proceedings in accordance with Presbyterian traditions and delivering a thoughtful and resonant sermon. In the evening, the Rev. J. Nethercott, incumbent of Swansea, led the service in the Church of England tradition, offering a meaningful discourse that appropriately marked the significance of the occasion.
Today, Bicheno’s Community Church continues to serve as a place of worship for a joint Anglican and Uniting Church congregation, as well as a Catholic congregation. Visitors are warmly encouraged to linger after services to engage in conversation and enjoy refreshments with the members of the community.
